Hiring in Technology and Transformation (Contract): Guide and Trends in 2026

Positive outlook for contract hiring market in 2026

Hiring activity for contract positions in Tech & Transformation remained upbeat in 2025.

Weighed down by economic uncertainty and headcount restrictions, employers turned to contract hiring to keep projects moving without committing to long-term, permanent hires. It also gave employers more control over payroll costs and flexibility over their team capacities. Where AI and digital transformation projects created short-term spikes in demand, firms could lean on talent with niche expertise to meet immediate needs.

“Notably, some organisations are now moving away from vendor arrangements and opting to hire talent directly on contract,” reveals Daen Huang, Associate Director at Robert Walters Singapore. “On the candidate-side, we also saw more openness towards contracting as professionals appreciate the higher immediate pay and exposure to large-scale projects.”

Read on to find out more about the labour market and hiring trends for Singapore’s Tech & Transformation professionals in 2026, with a focus on contract positions.

Contract boom extends into 2026

In the year ahead, Daen anticipates that contracting will remain the “go-to” solution for transformation-heavy or project-based work, particularly in fields like cloud, data, AI and cybersecurity. This marks a larger evolution in tech talent strategies. Roles that used to be offered on a permanent basis will increasingly be filled by contract talent.

In hiring, employers will take a skills-based approach. Proven project experience and certifications will take precedence over traditional career paths and educational credentials.

Given the regulatory scrutiny around Employment Passes (EPs), Singapore citizens and permanent residents will have a leg up in hiring processes.

Future-proofing against AI

Within the sector, roles with repetitive and standardised tasks such as basic programming, testing, L1 support or routine reporting are most vulnerable against automation.

Just like other talent in the industry, contract professionals should seek to deepen their domain knowledge and carve out specialisations in niche technologies. They should

also strengthen their consulting and stakeholder management skills, as these would position them as solution enablers instead of mere executors of tasks.

Being “tool-agnostic” also gives contractors a major advantage, so talents are advised to develop adaptability across tools and platforms.

Top roles and skills in demand

Cloud engineers and DevOps contractors will be highly sought after as businesses seek support for ongoing migrations and infrastructure projects. Demand is also high for cybersecurity specialists, who are engaged on a short-term basis to meet compliance and regulatory deadlines. Data and AI engineers are also in strong demand, as businesses look to build models, pipelines and deploy AI solutions for projects at hand.

As always, the industry prizes adaptability and learning agility, though this is particularly so for contractors who need to hit the ground running in new environments. Communication and stakeholder management skills are key for contractors who need to serve as the bridge between business and technical teams. Lastly, talent who can solve problems and deliver outcomes under budget and timeline constraints are also seen as great assets on any team.

Advice for talent attraction and retention

Hiring teams looking to gain an edge with contract talent should keep recruitment processes fast – contractors expect to hear about hiring decisions within a week or two. While competitive salaries appeal to everyone, Daen finds that bonuses and benefits sweeten the deal and make a big difference in retention. Having a plan for knowledge transfer is also important. At the end of a project, contractors appreciate a clean handover to internal teams.

Stability is less of a motivator for contract talent. What wins them over are factors like skills growth, project diversity, higher immediate pay, or the chance to work with top-tier brands or transformation projects. They tend to move quickly if a role meets the mark on these points.

Lastly, companies should also consider building an alumni pool of contractors. This allows them to tap quickly into proven candidates for future projects, instead of beginning their search from scratch.

Slight increase in salaries

Day rates and monthly contractor packages are expected to hold steady, or inch up, particularly in domains like cloud, data and cybersecurity where demand outstrips supply.

Job seekers may find that employers are now including perks like completion bonuses, paid leave or training allowances in contract packages.
