In 2024, Human Resources & Business Support professionals focused on adapting to remote and flexible work initiatives, prioritising employee wellbeing, and driving diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
As remote and flexible work arrangements became standard, workers are developing specific preferences for what they want that flexibility to look like. This has prompted HR teams to craft policies and practices that balanced these needs with business goals. Eleanor Tan, Consultant at Robert Walters Singapore, also notes that significant effort and resources went into formulating programs that enhance employee wellbeing.
“In addition, HR professionals are now leading the charge on DEI strategies, as companies increasingly prioritise building diverse, inclusive teams,” comments Eleanor Tan, Consultant at Robert Walters Singapore.
These trends are expected to continue heading into 2025, particularly as Singapore introduces Flexible Work Arrangements by the end of 2024. Businesses will rely on HR experts to rethink talent management strategies, ensuring flexibility can coexist with employee productivity and engagement.

The transition towards hybrid work models will drive demand for talent skilled in managing distributed offshore teams and employee engagement in remote settings. This is particularly relevant for the Singapore market, which will see new guidelines around Flexible Work Arrangements coming into place.
Eleanor also anticipates growing demand for professionals who are comfortable with advanced HR technologies and digital tools. Specifically, companies are after candidates who can leverage digital HR platforms to improve efforts around recruitment, employee engagement and performance management.
In parallel, HR professionals with hybrid skillsets – those who can manage multiple HR functions – will be in high demand, particularly among enterprises looking to streamline operations.
Many organisations now appreciate HR generalists, a trend that Eleanor says is even more pronounced in small to medium-sized enterprises. She reveals, “Instead of employing multiple specialists, HR generalists cover a wider scope under one role and thus help reduce costs for the businesses.”
Company leaders will also prioritise HR business partners, who help the organisation align HR strategies to overall business objectives and changing employee expectations. They will also rely on executive assistants to manage complex schedules and communication, so they can focus on high-level strategic initiatives.
Candidates with skillsets across various HR disciplines – such as recruitment, employee relations, performance management and compliance – will be greatly sought after in the year ahead as the market prioritises hybrid skillsets. Professionals with regional experience and stakeholder management skills are also highly prized for their ability to navigate diverse cultural backgrounds and manage dispersed teams.
Eleanor notes that while some candidates are open to exploring potential job opportunities, most are erring towards caution, opting to stay in stable positions instead of transitioning into new roles. Those considering new positions are reviewing offers more holistically. Flexibility, hybrid work options and career development pathways are now just as important as compensation. Candidates are also evaluating benefits like health insurance, dental benefits, annual leave entitles and performance bonuses.
To ensure that you’re making a competitive offer, regularly benchmark salaries against the market. Provide flexible work arrangements where possible to help employees balance their professional and personal lives.
"Invest in learning and development workshops, certifications and mentorship programs for your teams, empowering your employees to develop their career,” Eleanor advises.
For candidates looking to make a move, Eleanor offers clear advice: upskill and reskill to stay relevant. Remote team management, digitalisation and advanced HR technologies are key areas where professionals can build expertise.
“It is also important to develop your network, so attend industry events and participate in HR associations. Engage in discussions by sharing relevant content online to boost your visibility and credibility,” says Eleanor. “Lastly, be open to different opportunities. Consider contract and temporary roles, which are excellent platforms for gaining valuable experience.”
Salaries are expected to go up by between 5 – 10% for talent in the space. Those with in-demand skillsets and experienced candidates will have a distinct edge.
