Head of AI Engineer & Applied AI

We are partnering with a large organisation that is continuing to expand its investment in AI and looking for a senior technology leader to help shape the next stage of its AI journey. This role will take ownership of building scalable AI capabilities that can be adopted across different parts of the business, covering areas such as Machine Learning, Generative AI, intelligent automation, optimisation and emerging AI technologies. The successful individual will lead a team of AI and data specialists, while also playing an active role in shaping technology choices, solution design and how AI solutions are built and brought into production.

About the role

You will be responsible for developing the organisation’s AI engineering capability and creating a strong foundation for AI solutions to be deployed consistently and at scale.

Key responsibilities include:

• Shape the overall direction and roadmap for AI engineering and applied AI capabilities.
• Lead and develop teams across AI Engineering, Machine Learning Engineering and Data Science.
• Build common AI platforms, services and frameworks that can support multiple business use cases.
• Drive the development of GenAI and Agentic AI solutions, including RAG, AI agents, workflow orchestration and intelligent automation.
• Provide technical leadership across solution architecture, model development, data pipelines and AI system design.
• Establish strong engineering practices around MLOps, LLMOps, deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement.
• Work closely with business and technology stakeholders to identify where AI can create meaningful operational or commercial impact.
• Evaluate new AI technologies and determine where they can be applied effectively within the organisation.
• Ensure AI solutions are scalable, secure, reliable and cost-efficient when moved into production.
• Develop appropriate standards around AI governance, responsible AI and deployment readiness.
• Balance longer-term AI capability building with the delivery of practical, high-impact business solutions.

What we’re looking for

• Extensive experience across Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science or related engineering disciplines.
• Proven experience leading and developing technical AI or ML teams.
• Strong track record of delivering AI solutions beyond proof-of-concept and into production environments.
• Good understanding of modern GenAI technologies, including LLMs, RAG and Agentic AI.
• Experience with AI/ML platforms, cloud technologies and MLOps practices.
• Strong technical understanding of AI architecture and the ability to engage deeply with engineering teams.
• Experience in areas such as optimisation, IoT, digital twins or intelligent automation would be advantageous.
• Comfortable working with senior business and technology stakeholders and translating business problems into practical AI solutions.
• Strong commercial mindset with the ability to prioritise AI initiatives based on impact, scalability and value.
