What you'll do:
As Event Director – China (4-5 Month Contract), you will play a pivotal role in orchestrating every aspect of a major international exhibition and conference. Your day-to-day responsibilities will span strategic planning sessions with executive leadership through to hands-on management of operational details onsite. You will be entrusted with shaping the event’s vision—translating market insights into actionable plans that drive commercial outcomes. Your ability to build rapport with senior government officials and local stakeholders will be crucial as you secure partnerships that underpin the event’s success. You will oversee budget creation and financial tracking while ensuring all contractual obligations are met. By mentoring your team members through regular feedback sessions and fostering an inclusive culture of collaboration across departments such as sales, marketing, content development, delegate sales, and operations—you will ensure everyone is aligned towards shared goals. Your expertise will also be called upon to analyse industry trends for continuous improvement while supporting creative marketing initiatives that boost attendance quality. Ultimately, your stewardship will guarantee an exceptional experience for visitors, exhibitors, sponsors, delegates—and leave a lasting legacy for future editions.
- Develop the overall vision and strategic objectives for the exhibition and conference in China by collaborating closely with senior management and cross-functional teams.
- Design both short- and long-term sales strategies by identifying new revenue opportunities for existing and prospective clients, ensuring year-on-year growth.
- Lead the creation of pricing strategies, set sales targets, and establish detailed revenue pathways in partnership with executive leadership.
- Build and manage key stakeholder relationships—including senior Chinese government officials, local industry representatives, suppliers, venues, and agents—to maximise event value.
- Oversee all aspects of event operations from floor planning to execution, ensuring seamless delivery that meets or exceeds organisational standards.
- Monitor industry trends and competitor activities to inform event positioning and introduce innovative ideas that enhance influence and impact.
- Establish annual budgets, monitor ongoing financial performance against targets, implement forecasting processes, and ensure all revenue is collected as per contracts.
- Deliver comprehensive sales management by mapping markets, analysing data gaps with marketing teams, securing agents and pavilions, designing sponsorship inventory, and optimising exhibition layouts.
- Recruit, train, motivate, and develop a high-performing sales team; conduct appraisals; create incentive schemes; provide coaching; and foster interdepartmental collaboration.
- Support the development of aligned marketing strategies for both international and China markets; contribute to branding initiatives; devise opportunistic campaigns; ensure effective registration processes; and drive targeted visitor engagement.

- Demonstrated success managing large-scale international exhibitions or conferences within China over at least 7-10 years.
- Extensive people management experience (minimum 5-7 years), including recruitment, training programmes development, appraisals processes implementation, team motivation strategies design.
- Proven project management skills gained through 3-5 years overseeing complex multi-disciplinary projects from inception to completion.
- Full budget control experience encompassing forecasting processes implementation; revenue/cost monitoring; debt collection; financial reporting.
- Fluency in Business Mandarin/Chinese language skills essential for effective stakeholder engagement within China’s business landscape.
- Expertise in exhibition management—including floorplan optimisation; sponsorship delivery; agent/pavilion acquisition; CRM systems usage (e.g., Salesforce).
- Superior oral/written communication abilities combined with diplomatic professionalism when interacting with diverse audiences at all levels.
- Strong analytical thinking skills enabling you to break down complex concepts into actionable strategies while identifying patterns/trends relevant to event success.
- Excellent organisational skills allowing you to manage multiple priorities simultaneously under tight deadlines without compromising attention to detail.
- Willingness to travel internationally up to eight times per year coupled with flexibility around working hours—especially during onsite event periods.
